Welcome to Kiruna & Jukkasjärvi
Kiruna
This small mining town is situated 200 km north of the Arctic
Circle and is the perfect winter venue. Naturally, it is also the
centre of research for the Northern Lights. During the winter from
December to April the winter sky is often lit up by the amazing
Aurora Borealis, with its magical shapes and colourings.
Jukkasjärvi
Jukkasjärvi means "gathering place" and has for
centuries been a meeting point for the Sami peoples during their
long and often hard journeys. Today Jukkasjärvi is still a
meeting place, but for people coming from all corners of the world
to experience adventure, vulture, midnight sun in the summer and
a snowy wonderland in during the winter months.
The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi is constructed every year, thus
differing slightly from year to year. As soon as the temperature
is below 3 degrees the work begins. It takes some 10.000 tons of
crystal clear ice for the building and sculptures.
